Lich, Glen E. "Return of the American: Speculations on Fred Gipson and Texas Writing," Texas Christian University, December 1984. Advisor: Betsy Colquitt (12, 8)
This literary biography of Fred Gipson (1908-1973) explores the extent to which the works of the most widely read twentieth-century Texas writer before Larry McMurtry project an alter ego of mainstream America. Searching for what Leon Edel calls the “figure in the reverse of the tapestry,” the dissertation argues that Gipson’s historical writing and fiction reveal characteristics of the literature that emerging nations produce, while punctuating Gipson’s career and changes in his conception of the region. Citing parallels in the lives and writings of other Texas writers and public figures, the study outlines a broad regional ethology.
