Fischer, Paul D. "Radical Pedagogy and the Interdisciplinary Revolution: Teaching 'Youth Culture' for the 21st Century," American Culture Studies , Bowling Green State University, May 1995.
Bringing together the literature of critical pedagogy from Education, composition theory from English, and a cultural studies approach to youth and “youth culture,” this dissertation synthesizes a theoretically grounded approach to teaching first year college composition. Rooted in the liberatory philosophy of Paulo Freire, feminist, radical, and critical pedagogies which strive to make learners more active theorists of their everyday lives are engaged. Popular representations of youth are critiqued by learners. Using the required composition course as a catalyst, the transdisciplinary perspective of American Culture Studies is brought to the core of the undergraduate curriculum using existing institutional structures and priorities.
