This dissertation studies the interrelationship of race, class, and Atlanta public school integration from 1954 to 1991. Using primary and secondary sources as well as oral history interviews, the author analyzes the history of Atlanta schools’ changeover from a dual to a unitary system against the background of nationwide school integration, the controversy over the “Atlanta Compromise” of 1973 and the metro school lawsuit, and resegregation. The author argues that thirty years ago school integration was primarily a race issue, but today Atlanta school resegregation involves both race and class. Nonetheless, of the two, race remains the most decisive and powerful.
