Dey, Deborah. "Pastoral Themes and Their Use in the Meramec Dam Controversy," American Studies Program, Saint Louis University, January 1993. Advisor: Lawrence Barmann (2, 16)
This dissertation seeks to discover if the traditional and the industrialized versions of the pastoral ideal outlined by Leo Marx in The Machine in the Garden still exist in the late twentieth century. Five components of the pastoral ideal were first identified. Then the political discourse of citizens as they made their opinions known in the 1970s regarding whether to build a dam on the Meramec River in St. Louis county was examined and analyzed for these components. It was concluded that both versions of the pastoral ideal still exist today.
