McPherson, Dolly A. "Order Out of Chaos: The Autobiographical Works of Maya Angelou," University of Iowa, May 1986.
This study is intended as an interpretation of the recurring themes in Maya Angelou’s autobiographical writing and of the salient features of the literary techniques by which these cultural themes are articulated. To accomplish this, the author has sought 1) to identify the recurrent themes that dominate Angelou’s autobiography, 2) to examine the metaphorical schemes Angelou uses to synthesize her themes, 3) to demonstrate how Angelou connects herself with both black American cultural tradition and the dominant tradition in American culture, and 4) to assess Angelou’s contribution to the black autobiographical tradition. The author approaches this study through contextual analysis (literary and cultural) of Maya Angelou’s published autobiographical works. Private correspondence between Maya Angelou and members of her family, especially during the period 1931-1941, is of special value to this study.
