Lainsbury, Andrew. "Once Upon an American Dream: The Story Of Euro Disneyland," American Studies Program, University of Minnesota, June 1996.
On April 12, 1992, the Euro Disney Resort opened its gates to Europe and the world after years of intense political controversy. French objections to the development—ideological, economic, aesthetic, xenophobic—centered on what many called the cultural imperialism inherent in locating an American theme park on the continent. This study examines such concerns in order to cast light on the larger issue of how American culture functions outside of U.S. borders. Using Jules Prown’s three-pronged methodology for the analysis of material artifacts—description, deduction, and speculation—it evaluates the meaning and impact of Disney iconography in the global arena, examining the message that “It’s a Small World After All.”
