Jones, Nancy Baker. "On Solid Ground: The Emergence of the Self Created Woman in Contemporary American Literature," University of Texas at Austin, May 1986. (12,22)
This dissertation analyzes the works of Tillie Olsen, Leslie Marmon Silko, Toni Morrison, Maxine Hong Kingston, Alice Walker, and Grace Paley to document the emergence of a character called the self-created woman. While this study is primarily a work of literary analysis, it is informed by research in anthropology, folklore, and psychology as well as literary criticism. The self-created woman emerges as 1) emblematic of the complex, multicultural nature of American society, 2) the subject of a new myth about American experience, and 3) the core of an experimental yet optimistic body of literature that challenges postmodernism.
