Wallach, Glenn. "Obedient Sons: Youth and Generational Consciousness in American Culture, 1630-1850s," Yale University, December 1991. Advisor: David Brion Davis (23, 11, 12)

This study argues that from 1630 to the 1850s an American rhetoric unfolded establishing a discourse and experience of generational responsibility that transformed notions of national identity. Using sermons, speeches, public documents, diaries and other manuscript sources, it traces the roots of the terms “generation” and “youth.” It examines the use by antebellum white and black young men’s political and reform organizations of this generational discourse. The work offers perspectives on the generational significance of artistic nationalism and “Young America.” It challenges models of patricide and the conflict of generations and explores the gendered implications of youth and generations.
