Restad, Penne L. "O Holy Night: The Creation of an American Christmas," American Civilization Program, University of Texas at Austin, April 1993. Advisor: G. Howard Miller (8, 14)
This dissertation reconstructs and analyzes the process by which the “traditional” American Christmas attained its contemporary status as a national holiday and relates its significance to broader issues of America’s religious and social history. Drawing on diaries, letters, journals, newspapers, memoirs, and personal mementos for its essential details, this dissertation explores themes such as the forging of a national folk culture, the role of the sacred and miraculous in a putatively secular and pluralistic nation, and the ever-present concern over the “commercialization” of Christmas.
