Walzer, Andrew. "Nationalism and Masculinity: 20th Century Cultural Criticism," American Studies, University of Minnesota, July 1997.
My dissertation examines the responses of two groups of EuroAmerican male cultural critics to the changing political and cultural identities of women and people of color. I compare the writings of Van Wyck Brooks and Randolph Bourne writing in the early 20th century with contemporary critics Christopher Lasch and Robert Bellah. I suggest that each group of critics experienced a crisis of cultural authority as a result of their increasing inability to imagine themselves as the central representatives of an autonomous unitary national culture, often referred to as “the people.” In response, these critics attempted to overcome this crisis by recuperating a vision of the nation as a site of “deep fraternity” and empowered masculinity. As a result, they imagined a unitary American culture populated solely by EuroAmerican men and excluded women and people of color from their vision.
