Lensink, Judy Nolte. "'My Only Confident': The Diary of Emily Hawley Gillespie, 1858-1888," University of Iowa, December 1987. Advisor: Linda K. Kerber (22, 2, 12)
This is an interdisciplinary study of an extensive diary of a rural Midwestern woman. Its focus is Gillespie’s interaction with Victorian gender ideology as she attempts to control the products of her economic production and her reproduction. Intensive interpretation of one diary and intertextual comparison with other women’s writings illuminate recurring patterns of female experience. These individual patterns are then compared with current women’s history theory to expand it and render it more exact. This diary is also read as autobiography and the diary genre is suggested as the most accurate reflection of a female perspective and voice.
