Barrera, Aida. "Multiculturalism Before its Time: The Making of Carrascolendas," American Civilization Program, University of Texas at Austin, August 1992. Advisor: William H. Goetzmann (6,8,11)
This dissertation is a case study of Carrascolendas, a series of multicultural Spanish-English television programs addressing the needs of Hispanic children. Produced from 1970-1976, the series became the first of its kind to air nationwide on the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS). The dissertation analyzes the design of the program, in light of media theory, history, monocultural and multicultural archetypes, aesthetics, and mythology. It also looks at policy issues in education and public broadcasting. Because the author of this study created and produced Carrascolendas, the format incorporates autobiographical elements against a backdrop of events and attitudes about minorities.
