Smith, Katherine A. "Mother Earth, Woman Spirit: Women and the Feminine Character as Symbol and Reality in the Nineteenth-Century Plains Indian Culture," Saint Louis University, May 1992. Advisor: Elizabeth Kolmer (2, 8, 22)
This dissertation examines women and the feminine character and spirit within the nineteenth-century Great Plains Indians’ culture. Within the Native American concept of the sacred hoop, the research establishes that the source of the women’s strength, distinction, and influence in the culture derived from their connection, correspondence and alignment with the life-giving and life-sustaining feminine spirits. An egalitarian culture resulted which celebrated a duality of feminine and masculine in all aspects of life. Ethnographies, oral histories, cultural myths, and biographies/autobiographies were investigated using interdisciplinary principles and a methodology of text, textual, and contextual analysis.
