Jarvis, John C. "Mormonism in France: A Study of Cultural Exchange and Institutional Adaptation," Washington State University, August 1991. Advisor: Susan Armitage (16,21,3)
This dissertation considers the transmission of religious culture as an example of cultural exchange. The study explores the success of American Mormonism in France and the impact of it on the lives and values of its French converts. In essence, Mormonism’s success stems from its appeal to a basic core of French family ideals, traditional moral values, and religious practices. The transmission involves a multi-directional cultural exchange in which recruits absorb Mormon behaviors while the Mormon institution absorbs their diversity; this is part of a voluntary process featuring many alternative choices. The institution offers desirable “cultural goods” in exchange for personal commitment and community involvement which itself becomes self-perpetuating.
