Rustin, Nichole T. "Mingus Fingers: Charles Mingus, Black Masculinity, and Postwar Jazz Culture," American Studies Program,, New York University, August 1999.
This dissertation addresses the problem of historicizing and theorizing black masculinity in the post-World War II period through an interdisciplinary study of jazz bassist and composer Charles Mingus, Jr. Mingus’ unique experiences reveal how postwar jazz’s counterculture enabled black men to challenge prevailing racial stereotypes by representing themselves as complex subjects with multiple and contradictory experiences. Simultaneously, his experiences illuminate how jazz culture’s reproduction of broader U.S. racial, social, sexual and cultural politics also policed representations of black masculinity. Though unrecognized as representative of postwar jazz or black men, this dissertation argues that Mingus’ unresolved struggle to reconcile the conflicting meanings of black masculinity in daily life and in artistic performance was characteristic of his generation.
