Wagner, David J. "Material Culture of SLEWAPs: Signed Limited Edition Wildlife Art Photolithographs," University of Minnesota, April 1992. Advisor: Kent Bales (2, 13, 18)
The signed limited edition wildlife art photolithograph, or SLEWAP, is the centerpiece of a flourishing multi-million dollar publishing division of American art. Interestingly, whereas a typical SLEWAP sells for about $200 today, the same SLEWAP costs from about $4.00 to $5.00 to print. This dissertation seeks to understand why SLEWAPs are valuable, and does so by employing the paradigm of material culture studies to examine their imagery, ecological ideology, and publishing enterprise.
