This dissertation analyzes continuity and change in Chinese impressions of American women in a century of travel writing. A close look at the lives and works of Li Gui, Hu Shi, Yang Gang and Wang Xiaoying reveals that the making of American women in China has been facilitated and in many ways determined by the political, economical and cultural development in the two countries. The invisible hand of culture plays on the personal, social, and national level. It affects the selection, perception, and representation of American women.
