Barker, E. Shannon. "Los Tejanos de San Antonio: Mexican Immigrant Family Acculturation, 1880-1929," American Studies, George Washington University, March 1996.
This dissertation investigates acculturation in first and second generation Mexican immigrant families through a statistical analysis of the 1880, 1900, and 1920 Censuses of San Antonio, Texas, interpreted within the historical and cultural context of this particular Mexican American community. Through an examination of occupational mobility, family and household structure, marriage patterns, women’s roles and occupations, and other primary data including oral histories and community newspapers, this study reveals a community which was able to maintain and modify many of its cultural traditions due to its isolation from mainstream society, but nevertheless was transformed, particularly by economic forces which encouraged the construction of a unique and hybrid Mexican American identity.
