Metcalf, Greg. "Looking for Marlowe: Paratextual Characters in American Culture," Department of American Studies, University of Maryland, College Park, May 1993. Advisor: Lewis Larson (2, 14, 11)
A close reading of incarnations of the character of Philip Marlowe is used to explore the existence of paratextual characters—those which take on an existence separate from their originating texts. The original Marlowe narratives are examined as life history before the character is discussed in terms of “transparency”—the process by which author, actor, or other characters are seen “through” Marlowe. Visual representations, recreations, and adaptations of the character are considered, as is the role of academics as recreators of Marlowe. The mobility of authoritative texts from urtexts to “most-used” texts—especially video—is shown.
