Ritter, Jeffrey Michael. "Local Television News: Deregulation and the New Media Landscape," American Studies Program, Saint Louis University, August 1995.
The study of local television news is a step towards understanding how the relationship between information and democratic participation takes place in a world dominated by electronic, commercial media. This study found that the deregulation of broadcast television in 1984, along with the enhanced competition of tabloid news programs and cable programming, may have contributed to the current emphasis on sensationalism, crime, and entertainment news found on broadcast local television news in the Boston market. Other types of local television news, such as on regional cable stations and local origination cable stations, were generally found to have less of this type of news and more of an emphasis on local politics and public affairs.
