Suh, Suk Bong. "Literature, Society, and Culture: Upton Sinclair and The Jungle," University of Iowa, May 1986.
In search of a broad relationship between literature, society, and culture of the Progressive Era, this study examines Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle. It specifically focuses on the novel’s entanglements with the author’s life, Chicago Packingtown reality, publishers, readers, and the 1906 Pure Food and Drug Law. Contrary to the conventional, simplistic belief in the novel’s inherent power, this study shows that the book was intricately entangled with such factors as Sinclair’s ambition, publishers’ interests, and historical meat controversies. A variety of readers’ responses to the novel also document the complexity of the society and culture of the Progressive Era.
