Hulsether, Mark D. "Liberals, Radicals, and the Contested Social Thought of Postwar Protestantism: Christianity and Crisis Magazine, 1941 to 1976," American Studies Program, University of Minnesota, December 1992. Advisor: David W. Noble (13, 8, 6)
This dissertation is a case study exploring how a leading Protestant journal shifted from 1940s Cold War liberalism to 1970s radicalism on issues of race, gender, class, and empire, working within a continuous tradition of “prophetic” critique. Its method blends cultural history, religious studies, and theories of cultural hegemony. Issues include (1) the legacy of founder Reinhold Niebuhr and the “liberal consensus” he represents; (2) the rise of black, feminist, and Latin American theologies and their relationship to wider issues; (3) changing fortunes of “mainline” and evangelical Protestants; and (4) the problem of sustaining morally grounded criticism and activism in the public sphere.
