Haynes, Robin A.S. "Landscape as Palimpsest: The fugutive Images of Southeastern Colorado," Bowling Green State University, August 1989.
This study investigates the landscape of southeastern Colorado both as a single, intricate palimpsest and as a series of evanescent cultural texts. To accomplish this, the cultural terrains of the various residents-including the prehistoric Native Americans, the colonial Spanish explorers, the Anglo and Mexican trappers and traders, and the American homesteaders-are reconstructed. These social constructions of reality, which found southeastern Colorado to vary from a purgatory of lost souls to a heavenly garden, are explored by the examination of period documents-published and unpublished-material culture, and secondary sources from assorted disciplines.
