Streamas, John. "Japanese Americans and Cultures of Relocation," American Culture Studies, Bowling Green State University, June 2001.
As a struggle for control of physical spaces, the Pacific war reverberated in the mass imprisonment of Japanese Americans in barren and unfamiliar places. Japanese Americans and Cultures of Relocation examines the cultural implications of this policy called “relocation,” not only in wartime books and films but also in current revivals of the Good War narrative such as Tom Brokaw’s exaltation of a “greatest generation.” These implications include racial effacement in plastic surgery, racial imposture, elisions of Japanese American resisters and Japanese spies, assimilation into a de-racialized landscape of “one world” internationalism, and exterminationist rhetoric and behavior. The argument here is that Japanese Americans were victims of a physical dimension of racism that has been largely unexamined and that echoes in other American racial narratives: the racial geography of relocation.
