Immigrant contributions to early American education reveal the potential of Europeans to support American democracy. In ante-bellum St. Louis, Catholic teaching orders and Irish and German residents of diverse cultural backgrounds established free schools more quickly than American citizens, and unlike the city’s public scools, their institutions reached out to children of all economic and, frequently, also ethnic and religious walks. Enrollment lists, course catalogues, correspondences, teachers’ guides, community minutes, parish histories and newspaper reports provided much detail on the student populations, academic programs and educational philosophies of St. Louis’ early immigrant schools.
