Ignatiev, Noel. "How the Irish Became White," History of American Civilization Program, Harvard University, October 1994.
This dissertation seeks to address how Catholic Irish, a subject race in Ireland, became upholders of race discrimination in the United States. Focusing on the nineteenth century, it looks at early reactions of Irish immigrants to American white supremacy, later responses to abolitionism and the Civil War, and at the role of politics, the Catholic Church, and labor organizations in assimilating the Irish as whites. It discusses race riots and the triumph over nativism, and concludes with a literature review and a critique of the new labor history.
