Castor, Laura Virginia. "Historical Memory, Autobiography, and Art: Redefining `Identity' through the Writing and Theater of Isadora Duncan, Hallie Flanagan, and Lillian Hellman," Program in American Studies, University of Minnesota, June 1994.

Dancer Isadora Duncan, director Hallie Flanagan, and playwright Lillian Hellman each created innovative art, developed successful careers in theater, and wrote autobiography. This study explores the question of individual and cultural identity through theater. Using twentieth century American theater as a cultural microcosm, the dissertation integrates literary and historical criticism, and theater and dance history with its discussion of autobiography. It demonstrates that the writing by and about Duncan, Flanagan, and Hellman was directly influenced by her mode of theatrical production: performing, directing, or playwriting; and by the institutional venue in which she worked: independent production, noncommercial, or commercial theater.
