Borowicz, C. Joshua. "Henry Adams: University Education and the Republican Tradition," Program in American Studies, University of Minnesota, November 1994.
This dissertation focuses on the classical republican character of Henry Adam’s political thought, particularly the role of university education in defining and inculcation virtue among the leadership elite. It argues that Adam’s failure to find a suitable place in American political life suggests a flaw in the intellectual and institutional foundations of the republic, namely an inadequate educational theory and an educational system that lacks a national university as its capstone. Close reading of his work, especially his History and Letters, informed by the scholarship (Pocock, Bailyn, Wood, et al.) of classical republicanism constitute the basis of this study.
