Rishoi, Christy. "Girl Power: The American Woman’s Coming of Age Narrative," American Studies Program, Michigan State University, May 2000.
This study examines the role of the coming of age narrative in American feminism and in particular its crucial role in the constructing of counter-hegemonic discourses of femininity. While activists have succeeded in winning legal battles that have changed the legal status of women, these narratives perform the cultural work of exposing the painful contradictions faced by women as they come of age. Rather than sublimating the contradictory aspects of self typical of traditional autobiography the Bildungsroman, the American woman’s coming of age narrative suggests that multiple subjectivity is ultimately the source of individual power.
