Trigg, Mary Kathleen. "Four American Feminists, 1910-1940: Inez Haynes Irwin, Mary Ritter Beard, Doris Stevens, and Lorine Pruette," Brown University, May 1989. Advisor: Mari Jo Buhle (22, 2, 11)
This dissertation explores the transition from Victorian to modern feminism, through the lives and ideas of Inez Haynes Irwin (1873-1970), a novelist, Mary Ritter Beard (1876-1958), a historian, Doris Stevens (1888-1963), an activist, and Lorine Pruette (1896-1977), a psychologist. Utilizing their published work and personal papers, the dissertation contrasts the feminism embraced by these two generations of women. The nineteenth century tradition of social reform, female friendship, and moral motherhood differed from twentieth century feminism, which celebrated sexual emancipation, companionate marriage, and individualism, and represented a rockier road for modern women to travel.
