This interdisciplinary dissertation interprets the range of responses of Mohawk (Iroquois of New York) Indians to evangelizing Anglican missionaries during the eighteenth century. I employ ethnohistorical techniques-historical and anthropological methods and theories, as well as modes of analysis from archaeology, linguistics, dramaturgy, folk lore, sociology of religion, and comparative religion-to reveal the native perspective on missionization. I argue that most Mohawk converts experienced a complex relationship with Christianity, expressed by their selective practice of Protestantism. Many, for example, insisted upon receiving communion but refused to relinquish Iroquois habits to live as pious Christians. In this way, Mohawk converts exercised authority over the missionizing process, and constructed a new, self-styled religion that contained Christian forms imbued with Iroquois meanings.
