Tyman, Jonathan P. "Film in Science, Propaganda: Examples of Its Use in America, 1940-1950," University of Michigan, March 1988. Advisor: Frank Beaver (14, 2, 11)
This dissertation focuses on non-fiction film in America, 1940-1950. It analyzes the characteristic principles of Science Film and of Propaganda Film and demonstrates how these principles converge to determine the form of films that promote scientific and technological progress. The primary sources are films produced during the post-war period by the Ford Motor Company for educational and public relations purposes. Precise description and close analysis of the forms and techniques used in these films support the thesis that a full understanding of the persuasive appeal of non-fiction film requires a dualistic interpretation of the medium. Non-fiction film is both observer of and participant in actual events. It is therefore both science and propaganda.
