Singer, Beverly R. "Film and Video Made by Native Americans: A Cultural Examination of Native American Participation in Film and Video Production," American Studies Program, University of New Mexico, May 1996.
The study is an outgrowth of the Native American storytelling tradition and film making. It introduces historical events in Native society that have had an impact on contemporary Native identity. In reassessing the history of Indians in Hollywood movies the stereotyped portrayals of Indians as historical impediments are unchanging. Native film and video film makers are using the traditional oral storytelling practices as a foundation and seven films are critically analyzed to reveal the cultural perspective. The study also presents twenty-one interviews with Native film makers who address the racist treatment they have received by Hollywood and other white gatekeepers in society. Finally, the study charts the progress that Native people are having in changing the negative perception of “Indians.”
