Phillips, Anne Radford. "Farm Women of Stokes county, North Carolina and the Production of Flue-Cured Tobacco, 1925 to 1955: Continuity and Change," University of Maryland, College Park, 1990. Advisor: John Caughey (22, 23, 11)
Based on oral histories with women born at the turn of the century and on other research, the study explores the relationship between farm women’s lives and selected factors within the family, the county, and the larger national context. This is an analysis of women’s work in the family and in the fields. Significant variables are patterns of land ownership, the Depression, and World War II. Set in the context of the larger history of American farm women and plain Southern folk, the study illuminates aspects of the experience of rural women and addresses factors of cultural stability and change.
