O'Keefe, John T. "Family of God, Family of Man: Liberal Religion in Eighteenth-Century New England," History of American Civilization, Harvard University, August 1999.
This thesis uses religious practices as well as theology to define liberalism, and analyzes cultural change through the lens of social experience, including the experience of the eighteenth-century family. It argues that liberalism was not a decline from Puritan orthodoxy, but an integral part of a living religious tradition. The thesis describes the process of change within the tradition and the contribution that liberals made in turning the tradition’s attention to the elaboration of the “godly life” as the centerpiece of ongoing revitalization. This is done by examining the liberal religious practices of preaching, the Lord’s Supper, and family prayer. The history of Brattle Street Church and the training and career of its first pastor, Benjamin Colman, frames the study as starting points for understanding the transatlantic dissenting culture from which New England Liberalism emerged.
