This dissertation restores women to the canon of nineteenth century American self-help literature. It compares the texts of the most popular women self-help authors - Catharine Beecher (1800-1878), Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811-1896), Francis willard (1839-1891), and Sarah Bolton (1848-1916) - with those of william Thayer (1820-1898), a popular contemporary of Horatio Alger. Beginning with Elaine Showalter’s literary theory of women’s writing, the study makes the case that men’s texts are likewise the product of both the dominant and muted cultures. A study of gendered writing, it also looks for the interception of race and class in the texts.
