Morris-Shortlidge, Constance Elaine. "Enfolding Bodies: A New Visual Space," American Studies Program, University of New Mexico, December 1995.
This dissertation explores the changing dimensions of visual representation, heeding Haraway’s call for a feminist renegotiation of the visual, specifically as it rearticulates the female body. This rearticulation of the primacy of the visual requires an exploration of the conjoining paths of the artistic, media, scientific, and philosophical underpinnings of the visual, while simultaneously seeking directions that dismantle the binary structures inherent within the traditional visual paradigms. It applies these theoretical positions as they intersect with various products of mass culture. In undertaking a rethinking of our present understanding of vision and our visual culture, especially as it pertains to questions of race, gender, and the body, this dissertation is both working from and adding to an extensive discourse already in existence.
