Progler, J.A. "Encountering Islam: Essays on Cultural History and Representation," American Studies Program, University at Buffalo, The State University of New York, August 1996.

A multidisciplinary and intercultural work, this dissertation explores cultural, political, and economic dimensions of Islam. Eight chapters are grouped into three categories: “Islam and Western Civilization,” Islam and Black History,” and “Islam and Music.” All are linked by brief connective, reflective, and interpretive essays weaving various themes through different regions and topics. Several methodologies are employed, including ethnography, oral history, archival research, and media criticism. Chapters include: translation and critical reading of “Ben-Ali’s Diary,” written in Arabic by an African Muslim Slave on the Georgia Sea Islands; impact of Western education on the Islamic world during the nineteenth century; cultural roots of contemporary stereotyping of Islam in America; interviews with Muslims in America about music and the Islamic call to prayer.
