Qian, Mansu. "Emerson and China -- Reflections on Individualism," Harvard University, May 1992. Advisor: Sacvan Bercovitch (23, 2, 16)
Emerson, in his search for new inspirations, read and quoted the Confucian Four Books. He appreciated Confucius as an individual, but rejected China as a nation for her lack of individuality and individualism. From Emerson’s agreement and disagreement with Confucius, this thesis makes a cultural comparison and reviews the Chinese complex towards the modern age, with an emphasis on the importance of the individual in modern thinking.
