Gemme, Paola. "Domesticating Foreign Struggles: Narratives of the Italian Risorgimento and American National Identity," Department of English, Pennsylvania State University, Harrisburg, May 1998.
In response to the call for an internationalist American Studies practice, this study analyzes American texts that comment on the process of nation formation in nineteenth-century Italy and demonstrates that the discourse on Italy contributed to articulation of America’s own national identity. The formation of national identity is here understood as a process entailing not only differentiation from groups outside the national body, but also the creation of an imagined internal ethno-racial homogeneity. Therefore, this study focuses both on how America defined its political identity in the confrontation with Italy, and on how the discourse on Italy participated in the identification of the racial and cultural prerequisites for American citizenship.
