Burk, Rev. Michael. "Difficult Belonging: An Ethnographic Look at How the Church Excludes," American Studies, University of Iowa, December 1998.
The definition of “belonging” varies within the church. A trilogy of life stories illuminate one particular understanding. The individuals, whose stories are told, are gay and lesbian Christians, struggling to maintain their place within the church. Placed in the broader context of how the issue of homosexuality has recently taken shape in and around the church, these stories, with their unusual candor, support the claim that the church needs to be more open in addressing differences. It will be of value to scholars of religion, ethnography, gay and lesbian studies, and to general readers of topics on church and society.
