Dorman, Jessica. "'Deliver Me from This Muck-Rake': The Literary Impulse behind Progressive Era Muckraking," American Civilization Program, Harvard University, May 1996.
This study maps the literary terrain of Progressive Era muckraking. It is the first study to visualize muckraking through the artistic sensibility of its practitioners—and the first to identify the literary kinship of the muckrakers as a key to progressive group consciousness. I focus on the work of three writers: Ray Stannard Baker, David Graham Phillips, and Upton Sinclair. In an effort to reimage both the individual and collective identity of muckraking, I introduce previously unexplored material (unpublished sketches, pseudonymous fiction, personal correspondence, private journals) and read it alongside more familiar muckraking texts.
