Cho, Eun Young. "Cultural Authorities in Transition and Sam Shepard's Search for Identity," University of Hawaii, Manoa, December 1991. Advisor: Mark Helbling (2,12,15)
This study locates Sam Shepard’s works, including the plays Operation Sidewinder, Curse of the Starving Class, and Buried Child, in terms of the changing cultural context of the 1960s and the various forms of turmoil and disruption that shaped the new theater and Shepard’s imagination. The study considers such themes as the questioning of authority and institutional repression, reckless escape, the search for one’s true self, the longing for a mythic past, and the need for “home” in a community of other selves. By focusing on the implications of the homeward journey of the protagonist, the study argues that all attempts of escape and rebellion are ultimately an effort to search for one’s true self.
