“Star Course” traces the history of the American popular lecture system of the nineteenth century. Particular attention is paid to the ways in which a national touring system that presented famous individuals from diverse fields as “performers” helped to forge our modern conception of celebrity. The bulk of the work deals with the commercialized lecture system of the 1870s, and is based on original archival research. Marketing and promotion practices of post-civil war lecture bureaus are examined in detail. Lectures are considered as a pre-electronic medium that performed many of the celebrity nominating and sustaining functions associated with twentieth-century media.
