Crosby, Emilye. "Common Courtesy: The Civil Rights Movement in Claiborne County, Mississippi," American Studies Program, Indiana University, December 1995.
“Common Courtesy” is a community study of the civil rights movement in an isolated, rural, largely African-American county in Southwest Mississippi. This history is important because it was local women and men who laid the groundwork for the civil rights movement and continued to struggle for equality and decent lives long after the national spotlight had shifted away. Focusing on a single community will also helps us understand the priorities of local people and how these related to and diverged from national agendas and ideologies, while documenting important patterns of continuity and change missing from broader studies.
