Arenson, Adam . "City of Manifest Destiny: St. Louis and the Cultural Civil War, 1848-1877," Yale University, December 2008 .
In the middle decades of the nineteenth century, Manifest Destiny doctrines, slavery politics, and tremendous waves of immigration and urbanization transformed the United States. St. Louis was central to all of these processes and debates a hub of western movement, a destination point for immigrants, and the beacon of moderation in border-state politics. This project considers the wider impact of the Civil War and Reconstruction by connecting events in St. Louis previously understood as outside the realm of politics to the nation’s cultural transformation. It re-periodizes Civil War and Reconstruction policies, reframes the nature of the Chicago-St. Louis rivalry, and answers questions that persist in the self-perception and public memory of St. Louis. City of Manifest Destiny: St. Louis and the Cultural Civil War describes how cultural crises in this border-state metropolis revealed the wider cultural transformation brought about by westward expansion, civil war, and emancipation.
