McEuen, Melissa A. "Changing Eyes: American Culture and the Photographic Image, 1918-1941," Louisiana State University, May 1991. Advisor: Burl Noggle (2, 11, 22)
This dissertation examines the lives of five American photographers who worked during a crucial time—socially, politically, economically, and culturally—in United States history. These five women, Doris Ulmann, Dorothea Lange, Margaret Bourke-White, Berenice Abbott, and Marion Post Wolcott, drew from various sources (including private wealth, federal funding, private industry) to support their careers. The study, which treats photographs as historical evidence, reveals how these women served as both transmitters AND creators of change, and how Americans were portrayed through a medium more often subject to personal agendas than to social and political constraints.
