Franklin, Nan Wolverton. "Century Farm: The Shaping of an Iowa Landscape, 1851-1951," American Studies Program, University of Iowa, December 1994.
This dissertation explores the interaction three successive generations of a farm family had with the landscape during their one-hundred-year tenure in Cedar County, Iowa. Drawing on materials from an unpublished family history collection, the study attempts to show how settlers viewed the land, how they lived on it (both for profit and for pleasure), how they changed the land, and how they themselves changed in the process. By combining environmental history methods with issues important to the “new rural history,” this dissertation helps to provide some new insights into how rural American society was reshaped as it shaped its natural environment.
