Grayson, Elizabeth Pollard. "Calling the Heart Back Home: Irish Catholic Women in America, 1845-1915," American Studies, University of Texas at Austin, May 2001.
Irish and Catholic traditions influenced the daily lives of Irish immigrant women who came to the United States between 1845 and 1915. Their belief systems, their values, their daily activities, their relationships with others, and their major life rituals were all intimately shaped by their Irish Catholic heritage. As they established a new life in the United States, these women drew on their Irish and Catholic traditions to create a Irish-American culture. The self-identities these women formed through their relationships with family and friends were an intimate part of this creation of culture. These women were wives, mothers, daughters, lovers, and nuns. The ways in which the women integrated their Irish heritage and Catholic traditions into their family roles and into major life events such as marriages, births, and deaths distinguished them from other immigrant women in America and assisted in the creation of an Irish-American culture.
