Grasso, Christopher. "Between Awakenings: Learned Men and the Transformations of Public Discourse in Connecticut, 1740-1800," Yale University, May 1992. Advisor: Harry S. Stout (11, 16, 2)

Eighteenth-century Connecticut writers argued about the church, encouraged the legal profession, cultivated an enlightened, scientific attitude, and created an American literature. “Between Awakenings” looks at sermons, essays, pamphlets, poems and newspapers to show how their arguments also threw into question who could speak with authority, what knowledge had social value, and how ideas might be best communicated to the public.
